I found this book to be beneficial for those who have depression. The book is easy to follow along and understand because it takes you step-by-step through the process of overcoming depression and workpages.

Dr. Pennisky

I found this book to be vaulable and very helpful to those who are dealing with depression as well as professionals who treat people with depression. I believe professionals can use this book as the textbook to start and facilitate a psycho-educational group on depression.

Bob Edlestein, LMFT, MFT

I have bipolar and wasn't unable to find help- until I read this book. This book was better than therapy because I could finally understand what doctors were trying to tell me.

Richard Martin

This is the most practical self-help workbook for personal development that I have encountered in my nearly 60 years. The procedures, exercises, and the many opportunities for self-relfection are invaluable no matter how serious or how insignficant one's problems...and readers can go at their own speed, as quickly or slowly as is comfortable for their situation. Jill has proved a tremendous publich service with her book.

Carolyn Abbott

Ms. Maschio has, in my opinion, made a real contribution in this dark area and focused light on an overlooked and unexpected source of help: one's own 'self-start' button."

Depression and Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are common for those who have depression. Over time depression worsens if not treated. It can lead to feeling out of control and that there is no way out of a situation. When depression goes untreated, over time the brain begins to restructure itself. The brain can experience a "fight or flight" response to the depression.

Fight or flight is a natural human response from events that happen in our life. Say you are walking down a dark alley when a tall man with a dark beard, bandana around his head, and chains around his neck is carrying what appears to be a knife in his hand. In response to this, the brain will begin to communicate to other parts of the brain and body in order for you to make a plan and escape for your safety. Some experts believe that this fight or flight response stays on instead of shutting off. Panic attacks feel the same as a fight or flight response. Panic attacks are deliberating because your heart begins to beat fast, the mind wonders and worries to the degree it feels that you are losing your mind. You feel that you have lost control and feel trapped in your body.

What can I do to Stop Panic Attacks?

• To help with panic attacks, begin to deal with your depression. Having panic attacks is a sign that something is wrong in your life. Pay attention to this and start the process of getting help.

• Aside from discussing your problem with your doctor, identify what may be the cause of the panic attacks, and find a coping strategy to handle it to avoid having another panic attack occurs.

• You can also begin to rewire how you perceive the event that triggers a panic attack, and find someone to talk to and who can give you support. Talking with someone can make you feel better and give you comfort. You can learn how to retrain how you perceive the trauma or stressful event with your copy of When Your Mind Is Clear, the Sun Shines All the Time.
