I found this book to be valuable and very helpful to those who are dealing with depression as well as professionals who treat people with depression. I believe professionals can use this book as the textbook to start and facilitate a psycho-educational group on depression.

Bob Edlestein, LMFT, MFT

Ms. Maschio has, in my opinion, made a real contribution in this dark area and focused light on an overlooked and unexpected source of help: one's own 'self-start' button."

Jack Seaton

"This is the most practical self-help book for personal development that I have encountered in my nearly 60 years. The procedures, exercises, and the many opportunities for self-relfection are invaluable no matter how serious or how insignificant one's problems...and readers can go at their own speed, as quickly or slowly as is comfortable for their situation. Jill has provided a tremendous public service with her book.

Carolyn Abbott

I found this book to be beneficial for those who have depression. The book is easy to follow along and understand because it takes you step-by-step through the process of overcoming depression and wor kpages.

Dr. Pennisky

I have bipolar and wasn't unable to find help- until I read this book. This book was better than therapy because I could finally understand what doctors were trying to tell me.

Richard Martin

How the Brain Works

The brain is made of approximately 200 billion nerve cells call neurons. To give you an idea of how much that is, the U.S. population in 1970 was around 200 billion people.

bigneuron

Neurons are throughout the brain and are the brain’s way of communicating. The communication between neurons is what allows humans to perform what seems like simple routine acts such as get a blanket when we feel cold, remember a person’s name, or get out of bed in the morning.

Neurons will gather signals or messages and pass them on to other neurons to finish the communication process through an axon. Neurons communicate to each other by passing along information from one neuron to another. When a message travels down an axon (the tube part in the picture above), it releases chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) that then make it over to dendrites on the other neuron. There is a gap between the ends of two neurons called the synapse. Chemical messengers are released from on neuron, cross over the synapse area and land on the other neuron in small pockets call receptors. Then message once again travels through the axon (small tube like rod).
